Guide to The Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl is an amphitheater in Los Angeles, California’s Hollywood Hills neighborhood. In 2018, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it among America’s top ten live music venues. Its popularity as an amazing venue makes The Hollywood Bowl one of the top things to do near Studio City.

The Hollywood Bowl is recognized for its distinctive bandshell, which is a set of concentric arches that decorate the site. From 1929 to 2003 the site’s bandshell remained unchanged, until 2004 when it was replaced with a larger one. The shell is trimmed on either side by the Hollywood Hills and the renowned Hollywood Sign to the northeast.

The amphitheater is carved into the hillside which creates a concave shape. This shape is what is referred to as the “bowl” in Hollywood Bowl. The County of Los Angeles owns The Bowl. This location is home to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philarmonic. Aside from shows that have residency, The Bowl hosts hundreds of musical events each year.

The Hollywood Bowl Museum

Aside from visiting The Hollywood Bowl to see a show, you can visit to explore The Hollywood Bowl Museum. When visitors enter the grounds through Highland Avenue, the museum is one of the first buildings they will see. Admission to the museum is free, as well as free self-guided and guided tours. The Hollywood Bowl museum also offers free educational programs twice a year through Music Mobile, which is a volunteer program that delivers music lessons to students.

Inside The Hollywood Bowl Museum, visitors can expect to see exhibits featuring vintage sound equipment, photos, newspaper articles, and live recordings. There is also a number of antiques and memorabilia regarding the history of The Hollywood Bowl and the performances it has held over the years. Inside the museum, visitors will find the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame which features stars like Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks, and Frank Sinatra. Outside of the museum visitors can view The Bowl Walk, which displays vintage photos of The Hollywood Bowl.

Performances at The Hollywood Bowl

Performances at The Hollywood Bowl range in genre and draw fans from a variety of entertainment platforms. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra has featured talent from the opera, ballet, and classical music industries. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra has taken the stage with stars such as Luciano Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne, Natalie Cole, and Andrea Bocelli. Musicals also take the stage at The Hollywood Bowl including Chicago, Annie, Les Miserables, West Side Story, and Rent. School of Rock was set to take the stage but had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

Over the years, several notable musicians have performed at The Hollywood Bowl such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Christina Aguilera, The Beatles, Van Halen, Elton John, Tom Petty, and Sting. The Beatles performed a couple of times at The Bowl which led to a live album called The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl. In 2005, Cher performed the last two shows of her farewell tour at The Bowl. During the 2010s, Avicii, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Jason Mraz, and Kygo performed. Since the pandemic, Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes, Maroon 5, Doja Cat, and Coldplay have performed at The Hollywood Bowl. Dave Chappelle also performed on stay in 2022 and is one of the most headlined shows for a comedian to date at the venue.

Some upcoming events at The Hollywood Bowl include West Side Story, Dudamel and Paris Opera Ballet, Sheryl Crow, Diana Ross, Mozart Under the Stars, and Pink Martini.

Food & Wine at The Hollywood Bowl

There are a variety of food and beverage options for guests at The Hollywood Bowl. First, for visitors who have box seats, you are able to order ahead of time from a summer dinner menu and wine list which will be served to you right at your seats. Another option offered is the picnic boxes. The picnic boxes can be pre-ordered from their picnic menu which includes main course options such as salmon, beef tenderloin, grilled chicken, fried chicken, and a began summer vegetable option. Guests can also visit any of the marketplaces inside the venue that feature a variety of food options as well as beer and wine. Some of the menu items here include sandwiches, salads, cheeses, snacks, and desserts. There is also a mobile order option for those who would like to skip the lines and order street tacos or pizza.

The Hollywood Bowl truly offers something for everyone. It is a must-see location for visitors to the Studio City area.
